Learning how to make money with a mom blog and simultaneously be the superstar mommy in the lives of your family members is definitely a full-time gig. To say the least!

To start a blog in a niche – any niche – you’d first need to know the essentials of running a blog, but also spy on your competition to know how they are running theirs.

In this blog review, I’ll do a bit of spying on Melissa, who runs her very own mom blog “The Mommyhood Chronicles“.

Mom blogs are quite popular, as they usually give stay at home mothers a chance to earn some serious income while simultaneously taking care of the kids, cooking, cleaning, bills, dishes, pets, shopping etc. Needless to say, there are busy women out there who are blogging and earning money – lots of money.

But how?

Well, that’s what we’re here to find out. You and me!

So let’s head over to Melissa’s blog and begin looking at how she’s communicating with her readers!

First Impression

Alright, so the post is a product review and even has a giveaway of that specific product in the end – namely a Casio CT-X700 portable keyboard.

One advantage with mommy blogs is that you can promote a wide variety of products, as generally no two families look alike.

For example, one household might have a mother who enjoys cooking, so there are reviews of baking ovens and mixers on her blog. While – in another home – there’s a child who enjoys playing instruments, so the mom posts a review of a Casio keyboard on her blog.

The mommy niche is usually less strict in terms of targeting the audience, so it comes with a heap of opportunity!

Alright, moving on.

It doesn’t take too long to notice the sticky social sharing widget at the bottom of the page. Users will have no problems sharing this article with their friends and family.

The sidebar contains pictures of both Melissa and her children. It is a mom blog, after all! There’s also an “About” page that Melissa’s visitors may read if they’re interested in knowing more about her.

What’s more in the sidebar is a listing of which influencer networks Melissa’s currently working with. Influencer networks often provide you with sponsored content, that you can put on the blog to earn a bit of money.

The post itself contains plenty of images of the product. This is quite important when writing a review, since readers want to make smart purchasing decisions. Providing users with many detailed pictures is a good way to help them with that.

As I scroll down to the bottom of the page, I see something really impressive. People are posting comments – lots of comments. 122 of them, to be exact!

Engagement on a blog is extremely useful, as it shows new users that people are active on your website AND it’s also extra content for search engines to match search queries to. Meaning, better rankings in many cases.

What I Like About The Mom Blog

The author – Melissa – is building massive trust with her readers by having a big, clear picture of herself in the sidebar. However, she’s also connecting with her readers (most likely other mothers), by displaying pictures of her children as well. This is a way to get to the “same level” as your intended audience. Almost like mimicry.

Furthermore, she also utilizes an “About” page to allow visitors to get to know her a bit better, building more trust in the process. A big part of affiliate marketing as a blogger is built on trust.

If people don’t trust you – how are you ever going to be able to influence them?

Would you like to see how important influence is to your business? Of course you do!

In fact, you don’t have to look very far. Generously enough, Melissa is having a giveaway for the Casio keyboard. At the bottom of the post she states the terms for entering – including a clear call to action (CTA):

“Tell me your favorite feature in the comment section preceeding this post.”

The result? 122 comments!

In one single post!

At the end of the review, Melissa discloses her partnership with Casio. Basically, what she’s telling her readers is that she gets paid for visitors who click through to the Casio website via her post.

However, the opinions stated in the post are still Melissa’s, and this is super important to emphasize when doing sponsored content. You need to ensure your readers that the monetary reward you might get from doing the review does not affect your opinion.

Finally, Melissa seems to build her following through social media – Facebook in particular. At the time of writing this, her following has reached over 15.000. Not bad!

What I Don’t Like About The Mom Blog

As good as Facebook may be, it doesn’t beat having your very own list of e-mail addresses. What I’m missing on this blog is an e-mail marketing strategy. There’s no place on the blog where I can see that Melissa is building her e-mail list.

Also, the article is a bit too short. With the total of only 423 words, it’s not going to rank very well in search engines. I recommend at least 1,000 words, but that’s the bare minimum. 1,500 – 2,000 is even better, naturally.

Finally, with a total of 7 items, I feel that the menu has one or two items too many. It looks a bit busy and might confuse some visitors. Especially those visiting the blog on a mobile device.

What I’d Change About The Mom Blog

Before touching anything else on the blog, I’d first start implementing an e-mail marketing strategy. Collect those addresses and start building a long-term relationship with your readers. Each time a new article is posted, I would be able to just send out a message to all my subscribers and have them come back to my blog – again and again…. and again!

Mom Blog Email List
I can’t stress enough – focus on building an email list for long term revenue!

After that, I’d make sure to fill out the content quite significantly. It’s a review post and only contains 423 words. There’s so much one can say about a product. To give you an idea, here are just a few examples I grabbed off the top of my head:

  • Specifications.
  • What’s included in the box?
  • Quick info about the manufacturer, perhaps some history if it’s an established company.
  • Who the product is for.
  • How the product is used.
  • Comparison to other products.
  • The benefits and downsides.
  • Do you recommend it or is another product better?

You see, there’s a lot that can be said about a product in a review. There is no reason for thin content in this case.

Finally, I’d probably remove one or two items from the menu. Right now it feels a bit cluttered and distracting. I would perhaps even create a “Start Here” page, for new visitors to be able to find my most significant posts on my blog. This improves the user experience dramatically.

Wrapping It Up

Being a mom is a full-time gig. Add blogging to that and you’re working overtime.

However, plenty of women know how to make money with a mom blog, so why shouldn’t you be able to do the same?

Keep in mind that in order to be able to influence your followers, you need to establish trust among them.

Show them who you are, add pictures, give them a short presentation – whatever it takes to make them get to know you!

Engage with your reader and let them feel that there really is somebody behind the text on your blog.

Also, don’t forget to build your e-mail list to get visitors to come back. You’ll be thankful that you did!

Now it’s time for you to start your blog. Let me know in the comments below if you have any questions, feedback or just wish to have a chat!

To your success!
